Often combined with a CT, a PET scan can identify areas in the body where cancer cells may be growing, even before a tumor is identified. ![]() Similar to a CT scan, this will look at the soft tissue in your body such as your brain or your spinal cord to look for signs of breast cancer. To make abnormal areas easier to see, you may receive contrast material by injection into a blood vessel in your arm or hand. During a CT scan, an x-ray machine linked to a computer takes a series of detailed pictures of your chest or abdomen. CT scans are sometimes used to look for breast cancer that has spread to the liver or lungs. These aren't always necessary, especially if the cancer is caught early and is very small. The stage is detected by various factors including the size of the cancer, whether the cancer has invaded nearby lymph nodes, and whether the cancer has spread (metastasized) to other parts of the body.Īs part of staging breast cancer, we may use other tests to see if the cancer has spread.
